What Happens In Your Body During Conscious Connected Breathing

Most people who come to an IMD session lie down, put the headphones on, and breathe for an hour. They feel something shift. They leave lighter. But very few people understand what was actually happening in their body the whole time.

This is the science underneath the method.

The breath pattern itself

Conscious connected breathing is a continuous breath with no pause between the inhale and the exhale. You breathe in through the mouth, you breathe out through the mouth, and the moment the exhale finishes, the next inhale starts immediately.

There is no hold. No gap. The breath keeps moving.

This is the opposite of how most people breathe day to day. Normal breathing has a natural pause at the end of the exhale. The body rests there for a moment before the next breath begins. Conscious connected breathing removes that rest on purpose.

When you breathe this way for 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 40 minutes, the body's chemistry starts to shift.

What happens to carbon dioxide

When you breathe faster and deeper than normal for a sustained period, you exhale more carbon dioxide than your body is producing. CO2 levels in the blood drop. This is called hypocapnia.

Carbon dioxide is not waste. It plays a direct role in how oxygen is delivered to your tissues. When CO2 levels drop, the blood becomes slightly more alkaline. This triggers something called the Bohr effect.

Haemoglobin, the molecule that carries oxygen in your blood, holds onto oxygen more tightly when CO2 is low. Less oxygen is released to your tissues, even though your blood is fully saturated with it. This is one of the reasons people feel tingling in their hands, feet, and face during the session. The tissues are getting slightly less oxygen than usual.

This is safe. The body is designed to handle it. And it is temporary.

The nervous system switches

At the same time, the continuous breath activates the sympathetic nervous system. This is the part of your nervous system responsible for arousal, alertness, and the body's stress response.

Heart rate increases. Blood pressure rises slightly. The body releases adrenaline and noradrenaline. You are not in danger, but the body is behaving as if something significant is happening.

This sympathetic activation is what allows stored emotion to surface. Emotion that has been held in the body for years, sometimes decades, gets a route to the surface because the nervous system has been shifted into a state where the usual suppression mechanisms are temporarily offline.

The thinking part of the brain, the prefrontal cortex, starts to quiet. Activity in the limbic system, the emotional brain, increases. You drop out of your head and into your body. This is not dissociation. This is integration. The body is being given permission to feel what it never got to finish feeling.

What happens at the peak

Around 20 to 30 minutes into the session, most people hit what we call the peak. This is when the combination of low CO2, sympathetic activation, and the soundscape working together creates the conditions for release.

Emotions surface. Grief that was never cried. Anger that was never expressed. Fear that was too big to feel at the time. The body shakes, cries, laughs, tenses, softens. Whatever needs to move, moves.

This is not random. Trauma research from people like Peter Levine and Bessel van der Kolk has shown that unprocessed emotion gets stored in the body as incomplete survival responses. The breath gives those responses a chance to complete.

The shaking, the crying, the tension, the release. These are not breakdowns. These are the body finishing what it started years ago and never got to finish.

The soundscape is doing work here too. Low frequency tones, binaural beats, and rhythm shifts entrain the brain into slower states, theta and delta, where unconscious material can surface. The music is not background. It is part of the mechanism.

The shift back down

After the peak, we bring the breath back to normal. Slowly. The exhale lengthens. The pace slows. The body begins to return to baseline.

CO2 levels normalise. The blood's pH shifts back. Oxygen delivery to the tissues returns to normal. The tingling fades.

The sympathetic nervous system starts to stand down. The parasympathetic system, responsible for rest and recovery, begins to activate. Heart rate slows. Blood pressure drops. The body softens.

This is when integration happens. The emotion that surfaced during the peak has moved. Now the body needs time to settle, to learn on a felt level that it is safe to have felt what it just felt. This is what makes the change last.

The IMD Landing

The last 20 minutes of the session are designed around this. We call it the IMD Landing. The breath has returned to natural. The music has softened. You are guided through two visualisations.

This is not filler. This is the most important part of the session.

What makes a release land is what happens after the release. The emotion needs time to finish its arc. The nervous system needs time to rebalance. The body needs to consolidate what just happened, so the brain can update its model of the world.

People leave grounded. Settled. Complete. Not floaty, not destabilised. The work has been done and the body has been given time to integrate it.

What the research shows

Studies on breathwork and similar practices have shown measurable changes in brain activity, heart rate variability, cortisol levels, and reported emotional states. Sustained conscious connected breathing has been shown to increase theta wave activity in the brain, the same state associated with deep meditation and REM sleep. It has been shown to reduce cortisol and increase feelings of relaxation and emotional clarity in the hours and days that follow.

The mechanism is not mystical. It is physiological. You change the breath, you change the blood chemistry, you change the nervous system, you change what the brain has access to. Emotion that has been locked in the body gets a route out.

Why it works

Most tools for emotional wellbeing work through the mind. Therapy uses words. Mindfulness uses attention. Journaling uses writing. These do real work, and many people who come to IMD have done years of it.

But there is another layer underneath the thinking mind. What the body is holding. Trauma research has shown that unprocessed emotion lives in the body, not just in memory or thought. To move it, you have to work with the body directly.

Conscious connected breathing is one of the most direct ways to do that. It changes your physiology in a way that brings stored emotion to the surface so it can be released. It does this without you having to talk through your past, and without you having to figure anything out.

The body does the work. The breath gives it permission. The soundscape holds the space. The facilitator keeps you safe. And the landing makes sure it actually integrates.

That is what is happening in your body during the session. From the first breath to the last.
